2007 Harley Davidson Sportster XL 883 1200 Speedometer
The speedometer on the 2007 Sportster XL 883/1200 is an instrument mounted on the motorcycle’s handlebar indicating its speed. The speedometer circuit is made up of an odometer reset switch, vehicle speed sensor and the speedometer.
The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) is a sender device that measures the speed of the motorcycle’s wheel rotation. It’s attached to the rear of the engine crankcase, which is located behind the starter motor assembly. The sensor’s electric circuitry function is that of a Hall-Effect sensor triggered by the gear teeth of 5th gear on the Sportster’s transmission mainshaft.
The output from the vehicle speed sensor is a series of pulses and is interpreted by the electronic control module (ECM) circuitry. After the ECM explains the meaning of information it receives, it’s converted into serial data and passed on to the motorcycles’s speedometer to control the liquid crystal odometer display, as well as the position of the speedometer needle. The vehicle speed serial data is also communicated to the turn signal security module (TSSM) and the hands free security module (HSFM) for turn signal cancellation.
The odometer milage is stored and remains unchanged indefinitely when electrical power is lost, switched off or disconnected. The motorcycle’s odometer reset switch permits the rider to switch between the odometer, and trip odometer displays (A and B).
To adjust the trip odometer to zero, have the preferred trip odometer display visible, then press and hold down the reset switch. The milage on the trip odometer will appear for two or three seconds and then the trip milage will reduce to zero miles.
The odometer can display six numbers to indicate the maximum distance traveled by the motorcycle of 999999 kilometers/miles. The trip odometer can display six numbers to indicate the maximum distance traveled by the motorcycle with a tenth of a mile accuracy.

Dear riders,
I bought another sportster, this is a second hand bike, 883 2007, the speedometer work all around except to monitor the speed. The turn signal doesn’t switch off alone, and not idle at all, the bike seem running well. I replaced the speed sensor and check for any broken cable or connector, I replaced the main harm harness as was damaged, unfortunately the speed steel not working except for diagnostic. I believe I have to change the speedometer and I can fit only with the year 2004. Can I buy it second hand? I don’t like to spend £400 and still have the same problem. Thanks in advance.
